Mystery man manages to donk off in style.
You’ll remember from last issue we reported on the emergence of a mysterious Scandinavian player known only by the online handle ‘martonas’. His arrival signalled the start of a month of unadulterated cash game madness.
Such was the impact of ‘martonas’’s appearance on Full Tilt’s tables that a host of the site’s biggest players, including Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan and Ilari ‘Ziigmund’ Sahamies were compelled to drag themselves away from the world of nosebleed PLO to sit with the player in $500/$1,000 NLHE.
However, despite the roll call of big name players at the table, ‘martonas’ continued to annihilate the competition – at one point having over $1.8 million spread across four different tables – and even successfully achieved a feat that no other online player has ever managed in completely felting Tom Dwan.
With the player’s winnings spiralling up into the multi-millions, ‘martonas’ looked to be in complete control of proceedings and by mid-August the player was well on his way to booking a record-breaking month of profit. Unfortunately, ‘martonas’ reckoned without the durability of Dwan – and after licking his wounds and reloading his account “durrr” returned to the tables to settle the score in dramatic fashion.
This time things don’t go quite so swimmingly for everyone’s favourite mystery player as Dwan – seemingly having gathered enough information to suss his man out – proceeded to dismantle ‘martonas’ over multiple tables. Now having seen a substantial amount of their $2.6 million profit evaporate just as quickly as it had been earned, ‘martonas’ switched to playing $300/$600 PLO in a bid to turn the tide.
It was a decision that would ultimately prove fatal as PLO sharks Phil Galfond, Richard Ashby and Dang brothers Hac and Di all joined the fray and promptly relieved ‘martonas’ of the remainder of his greenbacks. With ‘durrr’ and ‘Ziigmund’ the main beneficiaries of ‘martonas’s savage downswing, the player plummeted from profit to break-even, eventually ending several hundred thousand dollars in the red.
Needless to say, the mystery player hasn’t been spotted on Full Tilt tables since, but rest assured when ‘martonas’ does get back in action, there’s going to be a long waiting list up in the nosebleeds. |
