LaBlond beats Hellmuth, Booth and Madsen on way to secure the Canadian Championship Heads-Up Main Event.
A strong field took their places at the Stampede Casino, Calgary, for the $5,000 buy-in Main Event of the 2009 Canadian Poker Championships, with some high-profile players making a deep run at the $100,759 first prize.
Canadian high-stakes pro Brad Booth made it to the semifinals before eventual winner Benjamin LaBlond beat him. The amateur certainly had an incredible tournament, laying waste to Jeff Madsen and Phil Hellmuth as well as Booth.
In the best of three matches, LaBlond had his toughest match-up in the quarterfinals against 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. The final hand saw the Poker Brat get his money in good with his signature hand, pocket nines, well ahead of LaBlond’s sixes. The river delivered a crushing two-outer, eliminating Hellmuth. Now we can sit back and ponder the reaction. It must have been a good one.
