Phil Ivey and Howard Lederer set up $5 million bracelet bet at WSOP.
While the revelation that Phil Ivey is partial to a bit of prop betting on the side of his World Series exploits will hardly be news to most, the fact that his latest wager with Howard Lederer amounts to some $5 million may just pique the interest a little.
Allegedly, the two titans of poker have agreed on a bet that will hinge on whether or not Ivey will be able to capture two or more World Series of Poker bracelets over the next two years – and the phenomenal amount Lederer has put on the line will ensure that his friend has all the motivation he needs ahead of this year’s Series in Vegas.
However, while Lederer must clearly think that Ivey’s bracelet winning days are behind him, it’s important to remember that over the next two Series, his prop bet partner is likely to play somewhere in the region of 80 events – meaning that a 1-in-40 success rate is all that is required for Ivey to net himself the huge seven-figure sum.
Given that Ivey won himself three bracelets in one Series back in 2002 and won a further two in the space of two weeks at last year’s Series, it would appear that Lederer is taking much the worst of the action – but then again, who are we to question the betting logic of a man known to his friends as “The Professor” anyway? |
