Derrick Wall Captures Betfair Live Cork
County Kerry native Derrick Wall ensured that the Betfair Live Cork trophy remained on the Emerald Isle last weekend as he fended off competition from a 206 runner-field to take the trophy and a €14,000 1st prize.
The result was no more than Wall deserved after turning in an aggressive yet patient performance on a final table that also included Betfair-sponsored pro Elisabeth Hille and the winner of the tournament’s last-longer competition, Cormac Corcoran.
Fortunately for Wall’s chances, the two players exited in 8th and 7th respectively – with Corcoran picking up a bonus €810 in cash and the same in tournament tickets for being the longest-standing qualifier to enter – before play hit something of a lull with action six-handed.
Despite the gruelling pace, however, Wall stuck manfully to his task, finding opportune moments to 3-bet pre-flop and add to his stack without ever needing to contest a big pot after the flop and he was soon rewarded when play turned four-handed and a deal was struck between the finalists.
With €10,000 each now locked up and the remaining payouts going up in €1,000 increments, it didn’t take Wall very long to finish the job as a flurry of action saw three quick eliminations, the decisive one coming when his Kh Qh held up against the Kd Jc of Craig Burke to hand him the title.
