Sisters doing it for themselves
Two of the highest profile and successful female poker players on the planet tasted simultaneous success on the felt yesterday. Both Vanessa Selbst and Melanie Weisner took down events in Las Vegas and South Africa respectively.
Team PokerStars Pro Selbst, took down the $5,000 event at the Festa Al Lago, held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Whilst the field of 55 was on the small side it was stacked with talent. The final table featured Andrew Lichtenberger (7th), Chris Bjorin (6th), Dan Shak (5th) and Daniel Negreanu (3rd). Selbst banked $90,693 for defeating Justin Young heads-up. The two-time bracelet winner sits second in the woman’s all-time money list, she’s less than $300,000 behind Kathy Liebert and it surely can’t be long until she leapfrogs her.
Meanwhile, Weisner was busy taking down the $1,000 six-max side event at WPT Johannesburg. She defeated Lucien Cohen (EPT7 Deauville winner) heads-up to best a field of 133 runners, first place was good for $41,289. The victory was Weisner’s second biggest lifetime cash and her first victory in an open event since December 2009.
