It’s not often that Daniel Negreanu plays second fiddle to anyone, but that’s what happened when he came up against the bearded wonder that is Brock Parker at the World Series who bested Kid Poker to win Event 14 at the WSOP, the Six-Handed Limit event.
If that wasn’t enough, he followed it up a few days later to land his 2nd bracelet in his 2nd six-handed Hold’em tournament - not bad for a guy more accustomed to playing fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering in his native Washington with fellow Magic player Justin Bonomo.
Out of the two bracelets you won, which one means more to you?
Probably the first one because who I beat [Negreanu] probably would have gotten me recognized even if I didn’t go on to win the 2nd. The 2nd one was worth a lot more money though.
What is the World Series going to mean to you next year?
Ask me in 10 months.
Will you be keeping both the Corum gold pieces or will they go to someone special?
I will probably give them to my parents to put on their mantlepiece or somewhere nice.
Can anyone ever win four bracelets in one series? What if they include Europe?
I'm sure it’s possible. I don't like the idea of including anything but the standard WSOP because you have to draw the line somewhere. What happens if they expand globally, five WSOPs a year? I don't really have a strong opinion either way but it seems better not to complicate things.
What is about the 6-handed game that you like so much?
It’s definitely easier to get inside someone’s head 6-handed as you get to play a lot more pots with them and build a history faster.
Apart from ripping up the live circuit, where's your bread n' butter mostly?
It varies. Mostly it’s PLO/mixed games with a few tourneys thrown in.
Does your beard have magical powers?
Maybe so…
Did the slight trim this year ‘tweak’ it in some way over last year?
I tilt-shaved it off after last year’s Series but was unhappy with the look, so maybe I was overdoing it and got it to the correct length this year; that’s why I won.
What were you most afraid of as a child?
Heights and dolls.
When is the best time to have room service?
That’s a trick question – there’s never a bad time.
You're broke but you have to make an impression on a first date. What do you do?
Bust out the two bracelets. Or did I sell them?
When was the last time you cried?
Probably while watching ‘Wall-E’.
They’re making a Hollywood film of your life. Who’s playing the lead?
They already did, it’s called "Owning Mahowny" [starring Philip Seymour Hoffman]. Post-bracelet? James Gandolfini, obviously.
What goes on your perfect hamburger?
A pizza.
Who would you rather be stuck in an elevator with? Hellmuth after a
particularly bad beat, or Phil Ivey making prop bets on the time it
takes for the elevator to get to the ground?
Hellmuth - I could watch him sit in traffic for hours and never get bored. |
